Geert Van Elsen on BetAdvisor - no longer verified
Geert Van Elsen is a top performing football tipster selling his advice via the tipping portal BetAdvisor, a service made up of 30 or so sports and racing analysts who aim to bring their skills to the betting market. Geert Van Elsen specialises in Belgian, French and international football, with picks for Asian handicap, 1X2 and Over/Under. There are an average of 3 picks per week. Proofed to Sports-Tipsters from 17th February 2010 until 15th December 2013. From the 17th February 2010 until the 15th May 2011 Geert Van Elsen was verifed together with all Betadvisor's other tipsters as one receord. It was then agreed that since such a record was essentially artifical (since no single subscription package for all tipsters existed) Geert van Elesen and Laurent Marty, in Sports-Tipsters opinon Betadvisor's two best tipsters at the time, would continue to be publically verified individually on Sports-Tipsters. In addition to this Sports-Tipsters agreed to continue to receive and archive picks e-mails for all BetAdvisor sports tipsters, and did so until verification was terminated in December 2013 (read below).
Verification was terminated for the following reasons. On the 12th December Sports-Tipsters wrote to the managers of Betadvisor to explain that it was no longer willing to support it, in view of the fact that it was still not possible to identify from individual tipster's records, which of their sports tips had been available for sale publically and independedntly verified (by Sports-Tipsters) and which had been trial tips (through Betadvisor's Tipster Academy), not been independendly verified and never available for purchase, despite repeatedly requesting since October 2013 that this distinction be implemented.
Sport-Tipsters had argued that without this clear distinction, records of tips that had been available for subscription purchase were being made to look better than they truly were, because of the inclusion of these Tipster Academy Tips. Whilst Betadvisor has used its Tipster Academy to trial and select tipsters for its main service, Sports Tipsters felt that not enough rigour was applied in this selection process, and consequently too many "lucky" tipsters were wrongly being selected for forecasting talent that few of them actually possessed. From an analysis of indivudal tipster records between the 15th May 2011 and 31st October 2013 (based on the tips e-mails that Sports-Tipsters continued to receive from Betadvisor), only 2 of the 118 tipsters during that period achieved what Sports-Tipsters considered to be a statistically significant level of profitability (99% confidence limit) that was evidence of skill over chance: Laurent Marty and Andre Nitu. 70 of the 118 tipsters actually lost money, although Betadvisor has stressed that these losing tipsers sold far fewer subscriptions. (Of course quite how anybody is meant to know what will ultimately prove to be a losing tipster before he has become one and at the time a potential subscription is purchased is anybody's guess but that is another debate to be had another time.)
The overall profit from the 17th Febraury 2010 to 31st October 2013 from 37,813 picks was just 0.44%. Without more effort made by Betadvisor to present this reality to potential customers, it is easy to see how the service can be viewed (as many have) as little more than slick marketing. Sports-Tipsters has always supported what Betadvisor was attempting to achieve, but given this preceived lack of recognition of its weaknesses, Sports-Tipsters was no longer prepared to put its name to the Betadvisor project. Sports-Tipsters offered to contiue verification until the end of December 2013 to give Betadvsior a chance to implement any necessary changes, but the last tips from any of Betadvisor's tipsters were received on the 19th December and reference to Sports-Tipsters as its sports verification service was removed from their website on the same day. Sports-Tipsters was never responsible for verification of any of the racing picks, and has no information as to whether verification of these tips has continued by Racing Proofing.
